How can I view my building permit history online?

You may use our Map My County (MMC) public use self-help tool – Provided by Riverside County IT GIS (gis.rivco.org) Link: https://gis1.countyofriverside.us/Html5Viewer/index.html?viewer=MMC_Public to view your parcel report.

Once you are on this page, you may choose to search by single APN, multiple APN’s or the address.  You will need to have your pop-up blocker turned off to complete the next step.  Click on “full report for this parcel”, then scroll down to “Building and Safety Cases” to view a list of permits for this property.

Please read the disclaimer at the top of the report.  If you need additional information, please call us at 951-955-2017 or email us at [email protected].

How far back do building permits go?

Our permit records date back to approximately 1963.  All building permit records prior to that have been destroyed.  If you need a record for a property that is older than 1963, you may contact the Tax Assessors office at https://www.rivcoacr.org/Contact-Us and select “contact us” to request a CAP report/Residential Building Record or you may come in person.  These documents may contain the building history or general details such as year built and/or square footage.

Are building permits available to view or print online?

Permits issued after 1997 are available to view or print from our website.  To view or print from the website, go to www.rctlma.org, click on “ONLINE SERVICES”, then click on “Building Permit Information” (on the right-hand side of the page).  Enter the permit number and click “Submit”.  To print the page, right click and select “print page”.  Repeat these steps on “Building Permit Inspection history” to see the individual inspections.

To obtain the permit numbers, please see FAQ “How can I view my permit history online?” and follow the instructions to locate the permit numbers.  Or, if you know the APN number, you may click on “cases/permits by assessor’s parcel number” on the “ONLINE SERVICES” tab for a list of permit numbers associated with that parcel.

You may also search public records by visiting our Plus Online website: https://rivcoplus.org/EnerGov_Prod/SelfService#/home.  You will also find “How-To Videos” at the bottom of that page to learn more on searching for records.

Can I obtain the building plans for my property?

The Building & Safety department does not maintain residential building plans.  They are either returned to the applicant or destroyed once the project is complete.

Commercial building plans are kept on file, and available to view by appointment only, but require permission to copy.  The following process is required in accordance with Section 19851 of the California Health and Safety Code:

Upon request for Commercial Building Plans, an affidavit form will be provided for the requestor to fill out, sign and return the Records Section.

Written permission from the certified, licensed, or registered professional (or his or her successor, if any) who signed the original documents and written permission of the original or current owner of the building must be obtained.

Form letters for the professional’s and owner’s permission can be provided or a letter of permission on original letterhead is acceptable.

Another option is to try contacting the original builder to see if they may have kept a copy of the building plans and are willing to provide you directly with copies.  The original builder’s information can usually be found on the building permit.

Am I able to obtain a copy of a 433a/413 certificate?

We do keep copies of 433a/413 certificates for mobile homes on permanent foundation up to October 18, 2007. For copies of 433’s issued after this date please contact the County Clerk & Recorder at 951-486-7000 or State HCD at 951-782-4431.

We do not keep copies of engineer certificates or plans for permanent foundations.  You would need to contact the contractor that installed the permanent foundation.

Am I able to obtain a copy of my septic plans?

We may have a basic drawing or sketch of where the septic tank and leach lines are located on a property.  These are typically found on the mobile home site prep or dwelling permit.
